Today I’ve got a guest post from Johnny Jet about the unusual places to visit around the world. Check it out!

Are you trying to spice up your travel this holiday season? Travelling off the beaten path to these unusual places to visit can be the missing ingredient you need to make lasting memories. There’s a place in nearly every corner of the world to visit.

For instance, maybe you want to search for oddly-placed utility poles. Or maybe you find the cheapest flights regardless of the destination. Better yet, you want to enjoy luxury travel without going to the typical hangouts.

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to go somewhere different, these travel ideas should spark some conversation.

Unusual Places To Visit!

Mongolia

Mongolia can definitely be one of the most unique destinations for international travel. This landlocked nation is quite picturesque. The best way to reach Mongolia is by flying into the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.

Once inside the “Land of the Eternal Blue Sky,” you can pursue these activities:

  • Learn about Mongolian history
  • See the world’s largest Ghengis Khan statue
  • Ride a camel in the Gobi Desert
  • Visit the Mongolian steppe by horseback

What about sleeping accommodations? The most traditional experience is sleeping in a yurt. Locals call them a ger in the Mongolian language. Nomads use these portable structures to move about the country as necessary.

Tanzania

If you spin the globe and travel to where your finger lands, it might land on Tanzania. Seeing Mt. Kilimanjaro might be on your bucket list.

You should also make time for the picturesque Serengeti National Park. The best time (and most popular) to visit is from late June through October. You can witness lots of migrating animals. Although the best time to visit can be whenever you’re able to travel.

Tanzania also has the benefit of having beachfront views on the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria. If you can travel on “Africa time” try seeing everything.

You can also try staying at the Manta Resort’s Underwater Room on the remote Pemba Island. This room is 4 meters (13 feet) underwater. Your windows look into the crystal blue Indian Ocean. If you prefer sleeping on terra firma, the resort has lovely villas and garden rooms.

Lagos, Portugal

One of the best spots in Portugal in the Algarve region on the nation’s southern coast. You can enjoy relaxing strolls on the beach or admire the tall cliffs dotting the coastline. If you’re brave, you might try cliff jumping. Make sure you land feet first to continue earning travel miles

Lagos Portugal

Lagos can serve as basecamp for your adventure. You’re far enough away from Lisbon to enjoy a full taste of Portugal. If possible, rent a car for your stay so you can explore the region when you need a break from the water.

Sea activities include kayaking, dolphin watching, and exploring caves during low tide. Don’t forget to enjoy seafood while you’re here.

Iceland

Visiting Iceland lets you answer this age-old question, “Is Iceland covered in ice?” You will need to book a trip and let us the answer. Maybe you love Viking history. Or, you’re a nature lover.

Iceland offers a little something for everyone. And because this nation is a little off the beaten path, it has fewer tourists than most of Europe. After all, when’s the last time you had a friend catch a connecting flight in this tiny nation?

One must-see landmark is the Blue Lagoon. This natural hot water spa lets you loosen up. Advance reservations are required. You can also stay at the on-site hotel for a multi-day visit.

Since Iceland is almost at the top of the world, you may time your visit for how many hours of darkness (or daylight) there is. In the summer months of June and July, the sun is out almost the entire day. However, it’s dark for all but a few hours during December and January. The winter months can be prime time for seeing the glimmering Northern Lights.

Guatemala

Guatemala is another nation that is easy to overlook when deciding where to get your next passport stamp.

Coffee lovers may love this holiday destination as you can tour a coffee plantation. Maybe you will even try to smuggle as many roasted coffee beans as possible into your suitcase. The Guatemalan roast can also be more affordable than the world’s most expensive coffee beans.

Oh yeah, you can also explore Mayan ruins, hike to volcanoes (some are still active), and explore historic ruins in Guatemala City or Antigua. Visit Guatemala City to enjoy a less-touristy experience.

Outdoorsy people will also love visiting Lake Atitlán. Author Aldous Huxley is credited with describing this spot as the world’s most beautiful lake. You can cross the lake by boat and decide for yourself. It’s also possible to wander through a nature preserve, buy Mayan-inspired textiles, and gasp at the high mountains from the water.

Uruguay

Visiting South America can be a little dodgy as of late. You don’t know when there will be national protests or a currency crisis. The tiny nation of Uruguay has been able to sidestep the recent turmoil gripping most of the continent.

Neighboring Argentina and Brazil usually steal the spotlight for their cuisine and natural beauty. You will see that Uruguay can be just as great.

If you’re only going to visit Uruguay, fly into the capital city of Montevideo. This capital city gives you pristine beach access, tango dancing, and plenty of chances to eat asado (barbecue) or drink wine.

What if you’re staying in Argentina and want to make an Uruguayan day trip. No problem. If you’re staying in Buenos Aires, you can easily ferry to Colonia del Sacramento. This historic town has been under Portuguese and Spanish control in previous centuries. Today, you can see the cobblestone streets, a historic lighthouse, and old city walls.

Christmas Island (Australian Territory)

Not too sound cliche but how would you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? Yes, this is a real island that’s an Australian territory. You can reach it by plane from either Perth or Jakarta.

The red crab migration can be a sight to see and this annual event usually happens during November and December. Exact dates are dictated by nature when the wet season starts.

You can also visit sparsely-populated beaches, fish, or go snorkeling. This might be one of the best-kept travel destinations in Oceania the world doesn’t know about.

Summary

All of these places let you travel off the beaten path. These unusual places to visit can also be a perfect excuse to escape your daily routine. In the process, you can get a new passport stamp and make unique memories.
