Sahara Desert Oasis – What Does It Look Like?

Sahara Desert Oasis Lesson

Many travellers go for a camel ride throughout the Sahara Desert as part of their trip to Morocco. This usually involves travelling in a minibus from Marrakech to the edge of the Sahara Desert. But this is also a good opportunity to check out what a Sahara Desert Oasis looks like.

My images of an oasis come from a lot of childhood cartoons, plus some cheesy 1960’s movies about the desert. This includes seeing a speck of green in the middle of a giant lot of sandy nothing! A place where there are fresh springs surrounding by date palms, where you can wash off the last few weeks of grime and dirt!

So, what does a Sahara Desert Oasis actually look like in real life? Well, just like I thought it would – a small slither of green in an otherwise endless brown landscape.

Check out the photo below. This pretty sums up and confirms the mental image!

Sahara Desert Oasis, Morocco Near Marrakesh

This is a village in Morocco, heading towards the Sahara Desert. The green patch is chocka-block (for non-Australian readers, this means ‘full’) of date palms.

Here is a close up of the Sahara Desert Oasis, showing all of the date palms. Quite an amazing sight!

So there you go.

You know what a Sahara Desert Oasis looks like now! If you ever travel to Morocco, it’s worth asking your guide to stop and show you one, because it’s much better in real life than in a shoddily constructed set in the movies!
