It’s good to touch, the Green, Green Grass of home..
Nimbin is located in the Australian state of New South Wales, in the northern part of the state, near the Queensland border. It’s basically the alternative lifestyle capital of Australia, where people go to feel more ‘relaxed’. That’s right, it’s the biggest/most famous hippie area of the country, and there’s lots of Green Grass – and I don’t mean the type that’s present on your front lawn.
When you go through Nimbin, it feels like you’ve entered another world. The main street is a series of shops painted in psychedelic colours, and most of the characters walking down the street usually have a set of dreadlocks.
I was literally offered a joint as soon as I hopped out of my car, and my joint-offer count was about 5 times before I left!
Green Grass Festival!
Each year, Nimbin hosts an annual Mardis Grass festival – which, obviously celebrates the wonders of hooch and all of the hallucinogenic properties it brings.
Check out the Mardi Grass website which has a great collection of photos. I like the one of the big Bong float in the street.
Funnily enough, the main street of Nimbin contains shops that pay tribute to this plant. Such as the Bring A Bong shop.
Unlike the Bong Collection Shop I spotted in Indonesia, Bring A Bong does sell a number of smoking accessories guaranteed to make you high.
More Green Grass Stuff
Ironically, smoking pot in New South Wales is illegal, like the rest of Australia – but in Nimbin, it’s tolerated somewhat.
So if you’re looking for an ‘alternative lifestyle’, check out Nimbin. You won’t forget it. I had Tom Jones’ song ‘Green, Green Grass of Home‘ running through my head when I checked it out!
So i am wondering how they manage to get away with it. Is it because it contributes towards tourism in the town!! Can you imagine trying to get any work done if you lived there permanently?
Work? I don’t think anyone works there!
