Yes, it’s a debate that will forever exist amongst travellers – What Is The Best Food And Drink In The World By Country?
Well, that’s a pretty subjective question. We all have varied tastes in food, and some of us are pretty adventurous when it comes to international cuisine (including myself) and then there are some where the sight of something a little different from home (and your comfort fast food chain) will send them straight to pounding the toilet.
So you could ask that question of anyone and they would always come back with something different.
But I’m going to have a different take on this – the Best Food And Drink In The World By Country – The Weird Version!
And the vast majority of these food and beverages have been from my personal experience. And I’m still alive to tell the tale.
Then there are some in this list that I wouldn’t touch with a 30 foot barge pole.

List Of The Best Weird Food From All Around The World!
Let’s go in alphabetical order!
Argentina
Steak. It’s not the steak itself, but the enormous quantities of it. So much in fact, that a ‘baby beef’ steak of 700 grams will send you into hibernation.
Australia
Camel Milk Cheese. Not easy to get hold of, but if you can, it’s frickin amazing.
and then there’s the breakfast staple, Vegemite! Yeast in a jar!
China
It’s not the food itself that’s weird. It’s the menus and signs in Chingrish which attempt to describe what the hell you’re about the eat.
Good luck with that.
Germany
Currywurst is one of my favourite ‘eat this at 3 o’clock in the morning after drinking beer all night’ food, right up there with the kebab. Deep fried sausage with ketchup and curry powder. Yummo!
India
Have a go at Eri Polu, otherwise known as Silk Worm Pupa. See more at Weird Indian Foods.
Indonesia
Have a go at deep fried chicken head.
And wash it down with some Kopi Luwak which has come out of the back end of a small mammal.
And have some cows nose in satay sauce for lunch.
And scoff down some tea with egg with dinner.
Japan
Japan is full of weird. The food is actually excellent. But there is the odd strange one like octopus lollipops.
And the plastic food displays which show what you’re about to eat.
Korea
Have some sea slug soup!
Netherlands
Have some Febo – fast food out of a vending machine
New Zealand
Huhu Grubs. Basically beetle larvae. See more at 5 weird foods you must try in New Zealand.
Peru
This one is hard. Eating an animal that you used to have as a pet. Not really tasty either. But just remember eating guinea pigs in Peru is like eating chicken in the western world.
Philippines
Ahh, Balut. Duck foetus aged just the way you want it.
Then there is the cornflake battered fish.
And even a restaurant that specialises in Spam recipes – a staple of the Filipino diet.
Samoa
Try some sea cucumber innards marinated in lime juice. I didn’t. That was a bit much for me.
Scotland
Haggis is by far the most famous Scottish Dish – stomach stuffed with mystery meat!
And that’s after you have Beefy Bovril for breakfast.
Singapore
There’s nothing like the weird seafood called geoduck. I think my eyes would water if I ate this.
Followed up by pig intestines.
but don’t bring the smelly Durian fruit anywhere, it stinks!
South Africa
Hmm, deep fried caterpillars. Taste a bit rubbery, but you could live on them for a while.
Then there’s Bunny Chow. Half a loaf of bread stuffed with curry.
And for dessert, a funny piece of cake from Johannesburg.
and of course, a vegetarians worst nightmare – Mzoli’s Meat near Cape Town.
Taiwan
United States
Just supersize everything, especially at the Heart Attack Grill.
Vanuatu
Eat the fish that tastes like chicken!
Vietnam
I’m not going anywhere near this one. Dog head from Vietnam. Open with caution.
Wales
Eat the beast and you probably won’t have to eat anything for the rest of the year.
Everywhere
Canned Food. Some just defy explanation.

Yeah, the menus in China are basically useless. The names of items rarely have any correlation to what is in the dish.
The silkworms are gross in every country. Big ones small ones, they all taste like crap.
If you have spent any time in Vietnam, you have probably eaten dog. EVEN if you didn’t know it.
I have never had egg tea, but I drink an egg coffee in Hoi An, Vietnam almost every day.
The coffee we keep in our house is called weasel coffee. The coffee bean was eaten and crapped back out by a weasel before it is packaged. We drink it every morning.
