Travel Books With A Laugh – I Like it That Way!
Last year, I wrote about my Top 5 Funny Travel Books.
But I’ve got another 5 Travel Books here that are all worth a read, if you like your travel writing with a belly laugh.
Check them out!
Holy Cow – Sarah MacDonald
Sarah originally has a hate/hate relationship with the subcontinent based on a trip she has to India in her twenties which makes her never want to go back. However, she’s transferred there many years later when she follows the love of her life. Her relationship with the country changes when she has to live in India, and it’s all done with a lot of great humour and Holy Cow is a great story of personal transformation.
Favourite Bit: The opening chapter where she says goodbye to India after her first trip. An airport beggar reads her palm and tells her she will return to India for love. She then screams ‘Never!’ and gives India, and the beggar, the finger.
Round Ireland With a Fridge – Tony Hawks
Like his other book, Playing The Moldovans at Tennis, Tony undertakes this trip after making a drunken bet with his friend at the pub. He bets that he can hitchhike around Ireland in a month with a small bar fridge, thinking that the locals will be hospitable enough to help him out. This leads to numerous silly adventures which has made this book a best seller.
Ironically, Tony’s account on Twitter is @thefridgeman. There’s even a movie planned soon, so check out the Round Ireland With A Fridge website. Not bad for a guy who was in the spoof musical group, Morris Minor and The Majors.
Favourite Bit(s): The numerous pub liaisons with locals around Ireland.
The Naked Man Festival – Brian Thacker
Most of Brian’s books have a central theme. This one is a good excuse to go travelling around the world in search of the most bizarre or offbeat festivals and celebrations. The Naked Man Festival takes Brian all over the globe, to places at home in Australia, to Japan.
Favourite Bit: Attending the Tamworth Country Music Festival in northern New South Wales, Australia, and listening to all the country and western songs about women and dogs leaving broken hearted men. Especially the song titled, ‘I’ve Never Gone To Bed With An Ugly Woman But I’ve Sure Woken Up With A Few’.
101 Places Not To Visit – Your Essential Guide to the World’s Most Miserable, Ugly, Boring and Inbred Destinations
I guess the title makes the subject of this book as obvious as dog testicles. I tend to like going to the odd craphole here and there just to remind me how lucky I am to have Australian citizenship. I do have a perverse taste for places that package tourists would avoid like the plague, but this book actually makes me want to visit *some* of these places, just for the bizarre factor.
Favourite Bit: The structure of the book. Each place is described with unique point system that awards stars for “Boredom Factor” and “Likelihood of Fatal Visit”..
Weird World – Bradt Guides
This book is basically an almanac or coffee table book of Funny Travel Photos from around the world. You can sit back and relax while churning through a number of amusing images. This book was created by people sending in their photos from all around the world.
Favourite Bit: The page that has one of my photos is in it – the Health Worker sign!
