The numbers thrown around here are staggering – and may provide a fascinating insight into the composition of Brazilian landfills!

89 Million free condoms at the Rio De Janiero Carnival, Brazil
Every year, 40 days before Easter, the whole of Brazil drops what they are doing to focus on one thing; partying. Yearly Carnival celebrations occur up and down the country during the week leading up to Mardi Gras; from mud-slinging fights in Paraty, to street parties in Salvador and, of course, Rio Carnival’s famed Sambadrome parades, where floats the size of houses and scantily-clad dancers entertain the thousands of revellers who come to see them.
Carnival celebrations have always been about excess and were traditionally seen as a last chance to dabble in ones chosen vices before giving up all bodily pleasures for Lent. Many things change over the years but not so when it comes to Carnival!
Something attested to by the fact that this year the Brazilian government handed out over 89 million free condoms to revellers, an increase of 26 million from 2010. And that was just in Rio!
Quick maths check: population of Rio is roughly 6.3 million – add on half a million tourists and that’s roughly 13.1 condoms each…
That’s a lot of Latex! Burning rubber of a different sort…

It´s really the truth!! But come on, with all that dinking and dancing half naked what would you expect?? Lot´s of unsafe sex… So the government had – once for a change – the good idea of giving condoms for free…We receive also a huge number of homosexuals for the carnival, and than you see, it´s quite wise having condoms for free…
I´m brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro, and oddly I don´t like carnival…
