Rainforest Canopy Walkways – Made of the Best Materials!
On the western tip of the island of Savai’i in Samoa, there is a Rainforest Canopy Walkway that you can cross over before climbing up some steps around a tree, to look at some views out into the Pacific Ocean.
It’s not exactly the widest walkway I have ever been on, but it does the job.
This is the view from the ground level. I guess it looks like any ordinary Rainforest Canopy Walkway that may exist in any heavily vegetated tropical area such as the Amazon in Brazil, or anywhere that has a closed canopy.
And this is what the walkway looks like up in the air.
But what makes this Rainforest Walkway a little unique is the building material that was used to construct it. It is deceptively simple but extremely effective, and I had to look twice before my brain registered what was really going on.
Anyway, have a look at the photo below. Can you guess what the floor – the main thing holding up all of your weight, is made of?
Believe it or not, this is a string of aluminium step ladders that have been strung together with some wooden planks placed on the top! Sounds simple, but it’s surprising sturdy for a suspension type structure.
Anyway, it’s capable of handling large people like myself who dare to cross it. I weigh around 100 kilos and I didn’t feel unsafe at all. Here is some footage (and proof!) that this simple structure can take people walking across this ingenious feat of engineering. Well, it’s not going to rust in the long term at least!
