Pub Crawl Time – Where The Hell is Quamby? Somewhere in Outback Australia!

If you’re looking for an honest outback Australian Pub on a journey around Australia (let’s call this a continental pub crawl), one of the more unusual pubs out there is the Quamby Pub in north-west Queensland. The Quamby Pub is located on the road between the towns of Cloncurry and Normanton, which is in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

What’s unusual about Quamby is not the pub itself – it’s a great, old fashioned country pub to have an ice cold beer on a really hot day – but that fact the town of Quamby has only one building or dwelling in the entire town – the pub itself!

That’s right, the town of Quamby IS the pub! Sounds like my kind of town!

Pub Crawl

There’s virtually nothing either side of the Quamby pub except for vast tracts of cattle country, but if you go at the right time, it’s full of local cattle station workers and sometimes the odd traveller like myself. A town used to be there ages ago, but when the railway line was removed, so was most of the town – except for the pub!

There’s virtually no public transport out this way (it’s pretty remote), so you would have to either hitch hike to get here or have your own car to have a drink at the pub. The only thing is that you don’t want to be busted driving under the influence on your way to wherever you want to go (police do drive around feeling a bit bored sometimes), but I’m sure that doesn’t stop some people!

What’s quite funny is the form of advertising the Quamby Pub uses to entice weary travellers into this drinking establishment. Regardless of which direction you are coming from, there are signs saying “Where The Hell Is Quamby?” and “Stop at the Quamby Pub For A Beer” which are painted on propped up car bonnets that are held up with star pickets. It’s completely unpretentious, but it works for me!

I even remember on one visit, I noticed that the word ‘Quamby’ had been hand painted on one of the highway signs showing the distance to other major centres!

Ironically on one visit at the Quamby Pub, I parked my four wheel drive outside. When I came out after a cold beer in the midday sun, I had discovered that my front left wheel had deflated, which meant I had to try and change an extremely heavy steel rimmed wheel in the hot sun by myself.

Maybe it was a sign to stop drinking beer. But it didn’t work!

So there you go. The Quamby Pub probably isn’t the most famous pub in the world, but it’s worth dropping in for a beer to say that you’ve been to the ‘town’ of Quamby on your big Aussie pub crawl!

The burst tire? Not purposely inflicted by the publican in an attempt to keep you there longer drinking more beer perhaps?
