Today I have a guest post about an unusual Pink Lake called Lake Hiller in Western Australia from Paul who runs Travels For You. You can also join Travels For You on Facebook.
I haven’t been to this place yet, even though it’s in Australia. But just remember, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea are closer to me than this spot!
But I’ll add this one to the list of things to see before I die!
A pink lake like a strawberry milkshake!
This wondrous world we live in surely has some strange and surprising ways of giving form to its creativity! I have seen a spotted lake (northwest of Osoyoos in British Columbia), a colored river (Rio Tinto in Spain), square-shaped trees in Panama but this one natural oddity seems to beat them all! It’s a lake and it’s …..pink!
Yes, as you can very well see, this natural wonder is pink from one edge to the other! Now, who says pink is out of fashion these days? Nature seems to have a soft spot for it!
Now leaving that apart, this place is still a mystery and keeps scientists befuddled. Located on the largest island of Recherche Archipelago, that is Middle Island, the Hillier Lake hasn’t been spared from all kinds of theories and speculations. Some of these theories state that the pinkish hue of the lake results from a dye that the organisms (Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria) living in the lake create.
Other theories point to the existence of red halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts as the one “guilty” of this colour.
What’s cool is that the water keeps its pink color even when collected in a container. I wonder what would feel like to swim in this lake. Well, it would surely make one feel like in candy land or something similar to that.
However, many tourists seem to abstain from swimming in the lake. Some people find it weird to swim in pink water whereas others won’t do that in an attempt to preserve this wonder.
Regardless of whether you swim in it or not, the Hillier lake will surely catch your attention. At least that what it did in my case. Befuddling!
More Pink Lake Stuff
Yes, it would be a bit weird to see this pink lake in real life. I have drank liquids that have looked like the colour of this lake, but haven’t swam in anything that colour!
It’s worth going to Western Australia, even though it takes ages to get around by car and you can fit a few European countries into the place, but see more at Discover Western Australia.
This pink lake is very strange, to my mind, this pink is not a natural color !
Definitely!
Oh my goodness! It makes me want to drink it — but I know I probably shouldn’t.
Maybe! Might taste like a milkshake!
This is a mysterious lake but I admit it really is awesome and cool. It’s color makes it different from any other lakes. Fantastic post!
Yep, a bit different!
“It’s worth going to Western Australia, even though it takes ages to get around by car and you can fit a few European countries into the place.” Gave me the chuckles, that one. And a pink lake is so strange, I wonder what the sunset/sunrise looks like reflected over those pink waters. It’ll probably be really intense.
I liked your blog related to pink lake which is a good place to travel. Thanks for sharing it. Keep posting for more.
