Today I have a funny travel photo from Cara who I met on a cool G Adventures trip to Japan. It’s of a Funny Warning Sign she spotted at a Japanese Onsen, which is a traditional hot tub or spa!
She spotted this one when cruising around Tokyo throughout the day!
Love it! There’s nothing like being dead drunk, but I guess this sign was erected for a reason – because someone has probably been absolutely rat arsed on beer and then thought mixing this with a hot water tub was a really great idea. And it’s probably lead to some bizarre, or possibly even unsafe consequences.
Anyway, travellers like trying out the Japanese Onsen because one apparently feels great after spending a bit a time in some hot boiling water. I guess there’s nothing like feeling that you’re on a cannibal’s menu!
The Japanese Onsen Warning Sign Reason
Actually, there is a really good reason for this funny sign – a Japanese Onsen can be so hot, that it can sometimes cause its participants to pass out. Hence, if you go for a hot tub when really drunk, you’ll probably pass out and drown – maybe that’s the reason they used the term ‘Dead Drunk’ in this sign!
Yeah, I guess that passing out and drowning in a vat of hot water wouldn’t make your day.
So I’m guessing this sign is possibly one of the most very useful phrases of Engrish going around in Japan!

Well, probably. But I think this sign was put up because there have been ‘dead drunk’ people in the onsens!
