Law Dog German Shepherds – With a Bit of Bite!
Ok, here is the disclaimer to stop the Jackass style idiots who think they can beat Darwin’s Theory of Evolution – DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Well, that takes care of the lawyers. Maybe.
After I checked out Alure Stanthorpe, Queensland Holidays sent me to a Law Dogs Australia show nearby to see how German Shepherds are trained as security dogs. Now, I had never really thought of checking out how these dogs are trained as the behind the scenes law enforcers. That’s probably because I’ve never had the need to be attacked by one because I must have not done anything that dodgey!
Having said that, the Law Dogs Australia show was fascinating. Matt, who runs the show, brought out a series of dogs at different stages of training and development, and showed how these dogs are firstly a deterrent, and as a last resort, a mode of self defence.
His German Shepherds (and all the dogs you see used by the police and security guards) need to be trained as robots so they only act on command – and not via instinct.
And there is no way in the world I would muck around with one of these dogs!
German Shepherd ‘Attacks The Travel Tart!’
Anyway, I really enjoyed the one hour show. I took a few stills and some video footage, and I even volunteered myself to be the subject of a dog training exercise. I even pledged my right arm (I’m right handed) because I trusted the skill of the dog and Matt!
I did remember Matt’s word – ‘whatever you do, make sure you let go of the arm protector’.
Check.
Here is a video I put together. This includes a great interview with Matt who describes the funniest situation he’s been in involving a Law Dog! And it’s a bit intimidating to move toward a barking dog who is flashing all of it’s sharp teeth at you.
Once again for the idiots, do not try this at home. While I’m not professional, the dog and the dog trainer are! Enjoy and have a chuckle!
