I like a big steak now and then. There’s nothing like have a large chunk of fresh meat being barbecued over hot wood coals. Sure, it makes one feel like a caveman, but it makes me feel very satisfied afterwards! I love having a long siesta after a big feed and a couple of beers.
And as part of those big feeds, I also love eating all sorts of food when I travel, and this includes meat – even the more unusual dishes like cows nose in satay sauce, pig intestines and chicken head.
Previous meat themed articles that have I’ve written about previously include:
- Wagyu – Worlds Most Expensive Steak. I didn’t have quite enough money to eat this!
- Best Steak in the World, Argentina.
- The most bizarre steak house advertisement ever, New Zealand. I didn’t eat there, but I’m sure there are many who would.
- Eating Guinea Pig, Peru. Doesn’t taste great, but you’d eat it if it was the only thing left.
- The Unwritten Laws of Morocco Meat. A tribute to open air butchers!
A while back, I wrote about a great experience in Cape Town, South Africa, regarding having a massive Street Party at Mzoli’s Meat.
This is where you go into a small, chaotic ‘meat restaurant’, choose to have as much meat as you want cooked up for you, and then spending the afternoon drinking beer and dancing the afternoon and night away.
But I don’t think I did the article justice in terms of the humongous amount of meat there. It was literally sprawled out all over the place, and just waiting to be devoured by hungry punters.
So I’ve decided to show you a meat photo essay that will probably block your arteries from you checking out these photos!
WARNING: These photos are a vegetarians worst nightmare! If you like your food green, look away now!
Fresh Meat Market Mayhem Photos!
The amount of meat here is ridiculous. Bear in mind, the street party each Sunday attracts around two thousand people, so you have to feed them all somehow!
Here is where you order the stuff. You can by it by the plate load.
No room for salad or vegetables here!
And these are the orders ready to be grilled over a wood fired oven!
There’s not much space to pile up the orders. Somehow, I don’t think this scene would pass some health and safety inspections around the place! But it’s not on the ground for that long!
And here is the final product ready to be devoured with your fingers! No cutlery allowed!
Anyway, for the carnivores out there, I’m sure I’ve made you hungry. I don’t think any of the vegetarians out there made it this far!
Seriously, Mzoli’s Meat is a great experience and worth the ride out to the township of Gugulethu.
Do it!
I love meat! Love your photos, and now I’m going to the local meat market and stocking up!
Go caveman diet! Anyway, if you’re in Cape Town, it’s definitely worth checking Mzoli’s out!
