Chicken Curry – in a loaf of bread!

If you’re looking for an alternative way to have a Chicken Curry (or any other Curry for that matter), check out the delicacy that is Bunny Chow in South Africa. This probably should make my 52 Tips for Offbeat Food and Drinks, because it’s a little bit different to the way I normally eat spicy food.

No, this isn’t to be confused with the Bunny Chow movie.

Durban in South Africa has a large Indian population, and an excellent side effect of this is the availability of some great curries. However, the locals have a different way of serving their Chicken Curry if you don’t want to eat it out of a plate – via the ubiquitous dish called Bunny Chow.

Here is a ‘sample’ of Bunny Chow pictured below, before I started devouring it.

Chicken Curry in a Hurry

Basically, Bunny Chow is half a bread loaf that has been hollowed out, and then filled up with a delicious Curry of your choice, such as mutton or Chicken.  The aim of this meal is to somehow eat it without falling into a period of hibernation – because it is so filling. Many meals in South Africa usually contain large amounts of meat that should take you back to the caveman era, and Bunny Chow is a large meat and bread meal that may take you a week to digest.

The words Bunny Chow derive from Bread (Bunny) and a slang word of ‘To Eat’ (Chow).  Contrary to what the name suggests, there isn’t a rabbit used in Bunny Chow, and it isn’t something that happens only during Easter.

Bunny Chow usually comes in two sizes – half a bread loaf, and quarter of a bread loaf. Regardless of which one you choose, the meal is a delicious lunch or dinner option if you’re feeling like a Chicken Curry.

However, the flipside to eating curry this way is that you eat Bunny Chow with your hands, not with cutlery. I managed to eat a half loaf Bunny Chow, washed down with a couple of beers, and needed a siesta to get over it.

And I probably blocked most of Durban’s sewage system with the aftermath, but hey, when in Durban, do what the Durban locals do!

But if you’re around in Durban, make sure you check out Bunny Chow and get stuck into some Chicken Curry.
